Rain, rain go away!

Here are some tips for days like today:

* Always start by misting a heat-protective spray on wet hair. Not only does it stop hair from drying out over time (which makes it much more frizz-prone), it helps create a barrier against environmental moisture.

* Add a little anti-frizz product. Just keep the application light, and if you can, skip the holding products (like mousse, styling cream). While the temptation is always to pile on more products when it's crappy out, this actually makes frizz seem worse most of the time.

* Blow your hair bone dry. Absolutely no moisture should be left in the hair when you're trying to maintain a blowout in humid air.

* Let your hair cool completely before stepping out into the elements (or finish your styling by using your dryer's cold setting). This'll ensure that your cuticle lays flat so water vapor can't sneak its way in.

* Resist running your hands through your hair. I always thought the oils from my fingers helped smooth frizz, but Gretta pointed out the whole issue of palm heat and sweat--it all goes back to avoiding letting moisture in the hair shaft.

Winter Hair Rehab

There's a bigger issue we are dealing with during this season: the lack of humidity. This is why skin and hair are so much dryer during winter. People who have curly hair will experience a decrease in their curl and excessive blow drying only makes it worst.

People are also blowing out their hair more; no one is going to walk out of their home in 12 degree weather with wet hair (this also causes freezing of the strand and therefore breakage).

For the lack of humidity outside I would recommend a humidifier inside the house, deep moisture treatments to restore elasticity, which will encourage the hair to regain it's curl.
For hat hair, never put a hat on even if your hair is slightly damp (you are basically setting your hair flat against your head as it's drying).

Also, keep a small boar bristle brush and a small can of light-hold hairspray in your bag, this way, when you take your hat off you can spray the brush and once you take it off brush through your hair, lifting your roots.

For split ends, due to excessive blow drying, regularly schedule trims and always use a thermal protecting product.

Dry shampoos are a great way to get an extra day out of your blow out without excessive heat.

An ionic hair dryer is highly recommend because they pump out a negative ionic charge, therefore neutralizing the ionic charge, reducing frizz and static. Look for ionic tools that sustain a natural ion, not synthetic.

Do you have winter hair? We hope the tips help you mange it a little.
